OUR STORY

WHO WE ARE

WHO WE ARE

In 1998, a group of Redfern residents came together with the vision of revitalizing Aboriginal culture through economic and social stability. Our founders began with maritime training as a way of offering local men the dual opportunity of engaging in culture and finding employment.

Tribal Warrior has been a central part of the Redfern community for over two decades. Throughout this time of rebuild and change, our vision has been unwavering – we emerged from a deep commitment to empower our community through connection to culture and family. All our programs are designed to contribute to a Redfern that is strong in its history, proud of its achievements, and economically self-sustaining into the future.

"Empowering our community through connection to culture and family"

Tribal Warrior has had a significant impact on the local Indigenous community, empowering Indigenous youth and reducing crime, revitalizing culture and community connection, economic and employment opportunities, strengthening families and social wellbeing, and bridging the gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians to better understand and respect Aboriginal perspectives, ensuring that cultural traditions continue to thrive in modern society.

The outcome of our work is the creation of diverse employment and income generation streams. Through our focus on education, employment, crime prevention, and cultural preservation, Tribal Warrior has helped strengthen Indigenous identity, reduce disadvantage, and create long-term opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Sydney.

This diversity places the Redfern and surrounding communities in an ideal position to adapt to and meet evolving challenges as well as grasp opportunities as they arise by playing a vital role in preserving and sharing Indigenous cultural knowledge.

Tribal Warrior is a non-profit community organization dedicated to empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and relies on the community for both practical and financial support to expand the services we offer. Over the years, Tribal Warrior has grown into a multifaceted social enterprise with a strong focus on cultural preservation, education, and community empowerment.

The organization is deeply committed to preserving and promoting Aboriginal culture, offering a range of cultural tours and experiences, educating both locals and visitors about the rich history and traditions of Aboriginal people. Tribal Warrior initially started with maritime training programs aimed at providing employment opportunities for local Aboriginal men. This training has since expanded to include various vocational programs designed to upskill community members and create pathways to sustainable employment.

Tribal Warrior runs several social programs aimed at addressing the needs of the Indigenous community. Through its various initiatives, Tribal Warrior has become a model for economic empowerment within the Aboriginal community. By generating income through social enterprises and creating job opportunities, the organization helps to build economic self-sufficiency for Indigenous Australians.

WHAT WE OFFER

From the original vision established by Aboriginal Elders and community leaders, the organisation began by focussing on maritime training. Since then, Tribal Warrior has expanded into the social enterprise it is today. Through its initiatives, Tribal Warrior plays a pivotal role in fostering cultural connection, education, and employment opportunities within Indigenous communities. The core of Tribal Warrior’s work revolves around:
  • Mentoring younger members of the community and their families to reduce our teens from (re) offending and to increase school attendance, engagement, and promote strength in culture.
  • Mentoring families to help keep our kids at home and safe, out of the foster care system.
  • Sharing and practicing Aboriginal histories, culture and connection to Country and Maritime traditions.
  • Training to equip participants for transition to work and providing employment pathway opportunities.
  • Facilitating greater economic participation.
  • Suicide prevention
  • Addressing trauma holistically.
  • Mentoring inmates and ex-offenders to prevent re-offences and help transition back into society.
  • Sharing Indigenous perspectives on leadership, social responsibility and knowledge in modern workplaces with cultural immersion training.
